Burgundy 2006 En Primeur

A delicious vintage, full of wonderful whites and classic reds, Burgundy 2006 wines are riper and better for early drinking than their exquisite 2005 counterparts.

If you’re keen to learn a bit more about the world of En Primeur then check out the guide below or if you just can’t wait to see the selection our En Primeur buyer Susan McCraith MW has picked out this time, then click here for her full report, wines and prices.

“2006 is an excellent vintage for white wines with lovely ripe fruit which can be enjoyed in their youth.” Susan McCraith MW, En Primeur buyer

Burgundy wines are perfect for En Primeur novices as they don’t require as much ageing as Bordeaux wines and prices are lower starting at just £35 for a case of six (first payment). Some of them will even be ready for Christmas 2008 drinking!

What is En Primeur?

Buying wines ‘En Primeur’ or ‘in the barrel’ is a way of buying fine and rare wines at the best prices before they are released onto the open market. You’re basically pre-ordering wine that has not yet been bottled to secure your ‘allocation’ of some great wines.

When are the wines delivered?

All of the 2006 vintage is still maturing in barrels in Burgundy! They will be bottled soon and shipped to the UK in the summer and autumn of 2008. When the wines arrive in the UK they are shipped to the Vinothèque bonded warehouse in Burton-On-Trent and then delivered to your choice of address. This delivery is made through our associates at Lay & Wheeler, who are experts in fine wine cellarage.

How do I order En Primeur wines?

Like with any other purchase have a good browse through what’s on offer. Our buyer, Susan McCraith, has been buying En Primeur wines for over 15 years and she travels to Burgundy every year and tastes all the wines that we have on offer. You can read her tasting notes here. Once you have made your selection call 0845 450 1592 (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm) or email waitrosewine@laywheeler.com to place your order. Please note that prices are quoted for 6-bottle cases unless otherwise stated.

Can I have my wines delivered straight away?

As soon as the wine is bottled and has arrived in the UK you will be contacted by Lay & Wheeler, who will organise for a delivery to your preferred address using their excellent delivery service.

Where can the wines be stored while maturing?

If you don’t want to cellar your wines at home our associates at Lay & Wheeler will store them for you in the Vinothèque bonded warehouse in Burton-On-Trent for a small annual fee. The wines will be stored there until we receive further instructions from you.

How do I pay for my En Primeur wines?

When you buy wine En Primeur you pay in two instances:

First payment
The first payment is the price quoted on our En Primeur wine list and includes costs such as shipping to the UK and insurance. Once we have received your payment, we will send you an invoice as proof of purchase.

Second payment
This payment becomes due when your wines are delivered to you. It covers the cost of excise duty at the time of shipment, delivery within the UK, and VAT on these costs as well as on the original purchase price of your wine. (Currently excise costs are £8.01 per 6-bottle case and VAT is added at 17.5%).
